Linux on Hannspree MicroPC Stick PC

Background A few years ago I bought a small HDMI Stick PC, the Hannspree MicroPC, which is manufactured by Quanta computer. Its a low power atom with 2GB RAM running a full install of Windows 10. Its plenty fast enough (even running Windows 10) for the price and convenience and it travels with me any time I go abroad. I always intended for it to run linux as i assumed that it would be slow, however I’ve only just got round to converting it as it actually works fine with Windows 10. ...

Dell Travel Keyboard (K12A) Repair

There is an excellent Travel Keyboard available for the Dell Venue 11 Pro tablet computer that I use (I have 2), which new costs about £200 however you can occasionally pick them up on ebay for much less, such as the deal I picked up last week for £29, for a refurbished one, listed with No Battery. Now what I took a chance on is that the seller is listing no battery because when connected to a tablet, the tablet reports there is no battery, due to a design flaw by Dell, where these keyboards have some kind of fault in them which allows the Lithium Battery Slice to discharge to such a low level that the protection circuitry kicks in disconnecting the battery, and preventing them being recharged. ...

Chinese V8 Smartwatch

I found this on ebay for £5.69, and I only bought it since it was advertised a having GSM.. which I assumed it wouldn’t and i’d get a refund and have a nice thing to take apart for free. As it turns out, once it arrived its a real working smartwatch, via bluetooth, as well as having a fully working 2G GSM modem. Obviously the first thing I did was see if I can figure out what it runs and if it can be reflashed. ...

Texecom Premier 24 Burglar Alarm GSM

I recently switched broadband providers from Sky to Virgin Media, one of the side effects of this is that I no longer need a landline phone line. A downside of this was that my burglar alarm could no longer talk to the outside world. (I was using a Texecom Com2400 PSTN telephony module) Since it was a pretty safe bet that the communications ports on the control panel motherboard were standard RS232 serial, I did a bit of googling to confirm that theory.. and quickly discovered that was a correct assumption. I hooked up a Chinese knock-off FTDI RS232-> USB adapter (99p), connected it up following the pinout I found online, and drilled a hole to allow me to mount the usb connector on the side of the panel. ...

ASUS X50R Hardware Tips

BIOS Battery Replacement I’ve been having some problems recently where the laptop would power on (the power LED is lit), but nothing appeared on the screen, and no boot sound was played. After accidentally leaving it in this state I noticed that it had managed to limp into the BIOS with a funny rainbow coloured logo in place of the usual white one. At this point I rebooted it and it came up with the usual BIOS logo and a message stating that the CMOS battery was running low. Excellent I thought, I’ll just go and change that and the problem will be solved. ...

HP ML115 G5 Upgrades

Do you own an HP Proliant ML115? Looking for a bit more power than the official specifications say you can have? Want to play games on it? If so this is the post for you. WARNING: You could do irreversible damage by following any of the information on this page. You are obviously on your own if you try anything here. I offer no guarantees, however I have personally tried everything here and it all worked for me. CPU Upgrade The CPU originally supplied with my Proliant was an AMD Opteron 1214 2.2Ghz Dual Core model. As I now use the machine for gaming I wanted something a bit faster. After some research I found a site (in Japanese) which seemed to be listing compatible CPUs. It’s not obvious what any of it means though (I think O means working, and X means not, with - meaning not sure), so I knew I may have to just take a bit of a chance. ...
